Gas Safety Regulations for new cookers?

morbodia asked:

Hi,
I’m currently in a council property and they are refusing to update my gas cooker point to a bayonet fitting.
Is it true that all new cookers come with this fitting and is it a necessary upgrade or just an improvement?
Is there anything in new safety guidelines about this?

I was told by a gas fitter that my old connection is now obselite?

Call the gas company to send inspector for inspection the cooker and connection pipe.

I find that the old rule “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” comes into play a lot in gasfitting… I’m not sure about your local codes, but here, our codes for acceptable fittings and appliances only apply to new installations.

older appliances that would not meet modern standards are still allowed to operate, until they break down. then the replacement has to meed new codes.

so, they may not be obligated to do anything until this current cooker stops working.

sorry, i’m not familiar with this “bayonet” fitting, so i don’t know if it’s necessary or not. I live in a 100 year old house myself, and much of my gas system is obsolete, but i’m not about to rip it all apart just to modernize it. see my point?

The Council is right. The gas safety regulations were changed and when I moved into a new council flat last year I had to employ a corgi (now gas safe),registered gas fitter to fit the bayonett fitting and a safety chain. I am now taking delivery of a brand new cooker which has a flame safety device and again have to employ a gas safe fitter to fit my new cooker. You are not by law able to do this by yourself and if you do the council can and probably will ask you for the gas safety certificate for your cooker.

  • can you install a gas range near a kitchen window

  • admin:

I see no law against, so long as it has been installed by a Gas Safe approved contractor for fitting range cookers, you would need to check with the contractor that he can fot range cookers

the link will take you to their home page and you can search for a contractor in your area who can
